The Story of Porter's Disruption in Indian Delivery

Earlier, transporting products used to be a pain. There used to be several private local agencies on which people depended, it was highly unorganised and unregulated. There was a problem with scams and parcels getting broken along with logistical and communication difficulties, these issues are pretty evident in any unorganised market. There was a massive opportunity in the space to organise this multi-billion dollar market, yet to be tapped by someone.

Meanwhile, two friends, Pranava Gokhale and Maneesh Agarwal, two young IIT Bombay graduates saw an opportunity. They had themself experienced the efficiency and high cost of traditional logistics In India

Solutions

Porter started with a vision to organise this segment. It took technology at its front. Users could easily book deliveries, track shipments in real time, and receive instant quotes. This transparency and convenience was a massive upgrade to the traditional system, where the booking was an easy process and costs were often straightforward and less. They developed intelligent algorithms that matched delivery requests with the most suitable driver and vehicle, ensuring efficient route planning and timely deliveries. This not only eased the task of the customer but also the staff and the driver. The Technology that Porter built made transferring parcels like Ordering food on Zomato(Not Sponsored)

Light Vehicles

Earlier courier service was done by heavy long trucks, which was very inefficient, costly and a logistic burden. Porter employs small bikes and tempos, whose operating and management costs are extremely low. Two-wheelers navigate through traffic with ease, reducing delivery times and increasing efficiency, this is very useful for urban and congested areas. Two-wheelers can reach places inaccessible to larger vehicles which increases Porter's reach in comparison to the traditional method.

Transparency

Earlier (Even now, unfortunately ) there was very little to no transparency, agents were very secretive about how their products were going, what time the products going and also the agent via which their products were going, this created a sense of tension in the brain of the consumer. Porter introduced a sense of transparency. you can track packages and get the date of arrival along with some extra features like knowing the name of the truck driver etc. This along with the intuitive customer service enabled us to capture a wider customer base and gain their trust.

Competition

Companies like Zomato and Swiggy who were previously into food delivery have widened their userbase. They leverage their large user base and established delivery networks to pose a significant threat. However, Porter differentiates itself by focusing on a wider range of goods beyond food and it is cheaper than amazon. Established players like DHL and Blue Dart hold a strong presence in intercity transportation and cater to larger shipments. But they can't match the remoteness of Porter, the affordability and the convenience of porter are unbeaten, and the only big competitor of Porter is delivery which is in a good pace and direction.
