How to choose colour and font in your website design

Creating a website may be easy to learn, but aligning your website with a company's vision, selecting the color palette, and determining the layout can be challenging. In today's article, we will delve into creating an effective website design.

Choosing a Color Palette

Selecting a color palette is often one of the most frustrating parts for a designer. Hours can be spent deciding on the right combination of colors. However, there are methods to make this process easier.

The first method is Logo Color Extraction. Suppose you're given a logo for the company you're working with. You can extract a color palette from the different colors in the logo. For instance, if the logo contains shades of blue, you can base your website's color theme on shades of blue, paired with white or black depending on your preference. You can utilize the 50:30:20 rule to decide which elements should be in which color. For instance, 50% opacity colors can be used in buttons, footers, and headers, depending on the website's layout.

Sometimes, a logo might be entirely one color, making it unsuitable as a color palette. In such cases, understanding the meaning of the color can help. For instance, if your company is associated with fun, you might use brighter colors to make your website colorful, such as pink, green, and yellow. However, it's essential not to overdo it. If your company embodies professionalism and leadership, avoid using bright colors and opt for subtler ones like black and gold or shades of blue/green.

Every color evokes a particular meaning. For example, red signifies urgency, which is why it's often used in delivery or fast-fashion websites. Blue symbolizes calm and peace, making it suitable for airline websites like Indigo or hospital websites. Hospitals avoid using red as it signifies a state of emergency. In offices, white is often used because it invokes calmness and promotes collaboration and a healthy working environment. Hence, in conclusion, color is one of the most critical aspects of website design.

Choosing a font for your website

Choosing a font is also easy with a simple method - understanding the goal of the website. For example, if you have an e-commerce website, you should use Bodoni font, as it is elegant, stylish, and high contrast, frequently used in fashion magazines or luxury branding. Similarly, if you have a newsletter website, you can use Garamond because it is classic, elegant, and sophisticated, often used for books and formal documents.

You can also choose the font family depending on the logo. For example, if your logo is in Montserrat font, then you can use the Montserrat family for the text of your website. You have to make sure one important thing: always use one font family in your website. Avoid or prohibit using various font families in your website as it can make your website look cheap and deceiving to look at. Try creating consistency in your font across your website and your company assets like visiting cards, advertisements, etc.
